Synopsis Reviews for I am Number Four :

At least the film opens in style. A boy we soon learn is an acrobatic alien youngling called Number Three (Kick-Ass stunt-kid, Greg Townley) is attacked and killed in the dead of night by a toothy extraterrestrial assassin (an unrecognizable Kevin Durand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Thousands of miles away, a nasty symbol burns itself into the calf of a young man’s leg. Because it’s his third scar — and because the film is called I Am Number Four — we’re immediately privy to three crucial pieces of information: we’re in the presence of the titular Number Four (Alex Pettyfer, Beastly), he and his fellow superpowered humanoids share an otherworldly bond, and the boy who died moments earlier was the third of his kind to be murdered by the assassin and his villainous clan. But rather than weave a grand-scale sci-fi mystery, Caruso and screenwriters Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Marti Noxon lay out nearly everything a fledgling Number Four recruit needs know at the ten minute mark. As Number Four explains it:

“This is the part I hate the most… the running. But it’s the only thing in my life that’s real. The rest is a lie, even Henry.” Henry being Number Four’s guardian, played with direct-to-video malaise by Justified’s Timothy Olyphant. “People think he’s my father. He’s not. He’s a warrior from my planet assigned to keep me alive. I don’t remember my father. All he left for me was some kind of box. Henry says he’ll pass it onto me when the time is right. I got my first scar when I was nine-years old near the border of Mexico. It woke me from my sleep. It was the first sign that the Mogadorians had found us here on Earth.” The Mogadorians being the rival beasties gunning for Number Four and his brethren. “The second scar came when I was twelve. I was in Colorado, in the middle of a spelling bee. As soon as I felt it, I knew Number Two was dead. Last night I got my third scar. I was just a kid when the Mogadorians invaded my planet, Lorien. Nine of us children escaped. We were gifted, meant to protect our people when we grew up. We never got the chance. Everyone was killed. We are the last of our kind. Three of us are gone. Dead. They are hunting us down, one by one, in order. I know I’m next. I am Number Four.”

Blu-ray I Am Number Four Review:
The Blu-ray left me much more satisfied with a great visual, and an AMAZING audio transfer. Colors are very natural, at least to the film’s tone, how some are a little bit darker, and detail is really revealing in human hair, facial features and the textures of buildings and such. The audio was great, with clear dialogue, loud shots and punches, and one scene in a fight at a football stadium will probably blow your socks off with two clips of some of the deepest bass I’ve heard. VERY nice release from Disney, as expected.

Overall, there’s a bunch to enjoy here. Good action, likable cast not being all “hot teenagers based on young adult novel series”; the performances are good, and the film has a sense that it’s one to enjoy as is, and didn’t feel like it wanted to become the next franchise for young adults, although adults will enjoy it, too. A blu-ray release from Disney that will exhaust your HT system will be much appreciated. This film comes as a great weekend rental, and a nice pickup for the right price. Recommended.

Top Critic Reviews for I Am Number Four

“Despite the cast of teenagers, this movie (I Am Number Four) skips out on being a sci-fi “alien” version of Twilight, and actually has performances that fare much better. Action sequences are pretty cool, with the young stars showing great agility. The romance in here is touched on enough to be cliche, but Dianna Agron is so charming, it’s not overblown and feels a little more sincere. Surprised Timothy Olyphant had as much airtime as he did, seeing how I thought his runtime would last the first 20 minutes of film casting him for the fans of him, whom will be pleased there’s a “Justified” shoutout in one fight scene ambush. Not a blockbuster, but this film felt as if it knew it’d be just that- A fun, action movie setting up to see if they will be able to continue the series. And that’s where it is disappointing. Much like the recent Fox shows that got cut, I would really like to see more from this series, but reviews and box office would suggest against it. Either way, I had fun with this film and am hopeful for more.”Someone said.

The sci-fi-teen romance I Am Number Four is witless, insultingly derivative, muddy-looking, and edited in the hammering epileptic style that marks so many films produced, as this one is, by Michael Bay. From Lisa Schwarzbaum.

“I Am Number Four,” the appealing new kid-on-the-teen-angst block, reverberates with much of the same dark combustible mix of action and romance that’s been fueling the “Twilight” vampire mega-franchise for a while now. From Betsy Sharkey
