Comments

The King’s Speech is a wonderful film about a man finding his voice when the world needed to hear it most, but that’s only the plot as it may be described at a more superficial level. Deeper themes on friendship, confidence, self-worth, love, respect, and hard work are all highlighted in this touching and powerful instant classic that’s sure to speak to every viewer who has ever suffered through any physical, mental, or emotional shortcomings and fought to overcome. Supported by a witty, meaningful, and self-assured script; strong direction; great sets and costuming; seamless performances; and impeccable intangibles; The King’s Speech is a complete film, a modern masterpiece with old fashioned sensibilities and a timeless message that’s sure to live on for decades to come. Anchor Bay’s Blu-ray release of The King’s Speech delivers good video and fine audio alongside a nice assortment of extra content. Very highly recommended on the strength of the film.

My Ideas

This film is a modern classic, realistic and honest and personal in the best of ways, but one that tells a story in which the ante is constantly upped. Colin Firth deserves every accolade his performance received: in this and A Single Man, he’s proven he’s as good an actor as is working today. I was truly impressed with Helen Bonham Carter, too, who I had last seen in Alice in Wonderland, and who I love in Fight Club. As the Queen Mum, she completely disappears into her role, and I enjoyed the move from underplaying to overplaying. And then, of course, there’s Geoffrey Rush, whose Devil-may-care speech therapist drives the film as much as does the King’s speech impediment.

What struck me most about this film was how the focus changed so seamlessly, from one man’s story to the coming Second World War, showing why it was so important for George to overcome this obstacle. I agree that it was better than The Social Network, and a worthy best picture winner. Not sure how often I’d rewatch it, but the performances are all must-sees.
