The quality. Because you’re limited. You can only have so much storage data on a disc. And Blu-Ray is great, but we wanted to make sure that it was the best possible presentation.”

“I think it will be fun for fans in November to really get a chance to look at, to look under the hood of what we were thinking when we made the movie,” Cameron said. “Even though we took things out, I think they’ll see why we took them out, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them in and of themselves.” He was quick to add that these scenes will be separate from the film, not added back in. There will be no option to include them when you hit “play.” He specifically mentioned four and a half minutes cut from the beginning of the film that took place on Earth, saying, “We’re not going to put that back because I actually now really like the way the film opens … once those key creative decision are made, I don’t think you go back from them.”

Cameron expressed his hope that ‘Avatar’ will be a force for good in the battle to save the environment. “I’m not trying to sort of sell DVDs on the back of the hardship of the planet as much as I’m hoping that continued conversation around ‘Avatar’ and around the needs and the issues will actually kind of elevate consciousness and help us get the things done that need to get done. That’s kind of my new mission.
